The 80286 became known as the ‘286’ and was a 16 bit processor with memory management built in.
The 80286 was rated at a clock speed of 5, 6 and 8 MHz and 134,000 transistors and could address up to 16mb of RAM. It was originally developed for use in communications systems, but ended up being mainly used in PCs by IBM.
The 8026 continued Intel’s dominance of the CPU market and led to further advances in processors in the future including the 80386 and the 80486.
