Todays updates centred around a few different things – continuing to implement some speed improvements, addressing the style of the site and reducing the number of options in the main menu.
Speed improvements today have focussed on the images used in the site. Most have now been compressed further or converted to webp images to further boost speed on the pages.
In terms of the style a number of things have been added in today:
- Bolded menu options and increased font size to make them clearer.
- Added blue or grey accents to different headings in pages to make different sections stand out
- Added Footer widgets for social media icons and also a Ko-Fi support button
For the design the decision was also made to remove some of the sub menu options under CS Tools. The decision was also made to rename this to Study CS. The sub menu on smaller screens was simply overflowing with all the options so options like binary addition, binary to denary etc have been put into a menu option called Binary. Keyword scramble, keyword match have been put into an option called CS Keywords.
I have also moved Python Tasks under the Code in Python menu option – it seems to make more sense to keep everything about Python and programming together.
This has greatly reduced the drop down options from something like 16 to 9! I’m wary that there is a little more to do here in the future as other features and pages get added (like Hex is all on it’s own …) but for now this seems to work a little better than it did before.
The next thing on the list is to actually update some of the options and headings in some of the pages as a lot of these are still labelled as following OCR specification J276 (which has now come to an end). These will be gone through and updated to the new OCR specification J277.
