For this update I’ve been concentrating on the long term viability of the site. Basically making sure that the site has a consistent message about what it offers – “free Computer Science education resources” for example is the key term that I want to push. You should see this phrase a bit more consistently across the site now.
Going back to long term viability – I have decided to include Google advertising into the site. I’ve wrestled with this for a while but as I currently have no sponsor’s for the site and it is, at the minute, funded entirely by myself with no monetary incentive for the work I put in to it.
I have tried to keep the advertising as low key as possible (don’t expect to see them plastered all over the page) and have told Google to put them mainly in the lower half of the page. Any revenue from these adverts will go towards hosting and other associated running costs.
The Google adverts I see as a temporary fix. Hopefully in the future the site can get some sponsorship or some donations and the adverts can be turned off. Sponsorships and donations are something that I will try and make more visible as this isn’t clear at the moment.
Hopefully you can see why I’ve included the advertising and my thought process behind the decision.
I’ve also added a video on how to use the online Caesar Cipher wheel and included this as part of the help / instructions on the page.
My aim is to create more videos on how to use features from the site and expand the CS Nibbles video series. This all takes time to do (writing scripts, recording, editing etc). Once I have a few more videos I will be looking at other ways to include videos into the site as I appreciate that most schools will block YouTube so these may not be as useful in an educational setting.
If I could please ask you to subscribe to the YouTube channel this will eventually help support us. Once we get over 1000 subscribers (and 4000 watch hours in a year!) we can apply for monetisation which can again help to fund the site.
Thank you for reading and thank you for your support.
