Today I have been mostly working on the Keyword scramble games.
As mentioned in the last update all of the KS4 Keyword scrambles had been completed so I was going to concentrate on the KS3 versions. As I mentioned in the last blog – it was decided that I would work on the KS3 scheme of work from www.teachcomputing.org as it was decided that this would potentially have more appeal.
Now that I have started it I’ve realised what a massive task this is going to be. Not only do I have to go through all of the lessons and figure out what keywords are going to be needed for each topic, I also need to write a description for what each of the keywords means so that I can implement them into the keyword scramble and into the keyword match games.
I then have to create a page for each topic and then edit the JS for the game to include the keywords and the hints / descriptions of each keyword.
If I did all the published topics for Y7, Y8, Y9 that is 18 different topics with 6 lessons each in that I have to crawl through for keywords and who knows how many keywords for each topic that I have to make a description for!
While I’ve had a good crack at this today this is something that I think is going to have to be built up over time. What I plan to do is get the keywords into the scramble game then slowly but surely work through and create the descriptions for each of the keywords. This way students and teachers can potentially have the keyword scramble live and active they just won’t have the hints.
Of course, to get the keyword matchup game completed I’m going to have to complete the descriptions for each keyword. What I may do is try and concentrate on the first topics for each year group (7, 8, 9) so that they can be used from September but of course some teachers will choose to teach the course in a different order (I won’t be able to please everyone).
Getting the keywords down will also allow me to produce other resources too, such as Never Heard the Word Grids which are great for some learners who struggle with the volume and complexity of the vocabulary that Computer Science has.
I’ve got a great addition to the site coming soon once it has been tweaked so hopefully I’ll be able to share this soon.
